Learn how to make Chavali Chi Usal recipe from our chef Smita Deo on Ruchkar Mejwani. <br /> <br />Chavali Chi Usal / Black Eyed Peas Masala is a Maharashtrian main course recipe where the pressure cooked black peas are mixed with onion coconut gravy and then flavoured with spices. The gravy goes very well with bhakri or chapati. <br /> <br />Ingredients: <br /> <br />1 & 1/2 Cup Chavali <br />1 Litre Water <br />Salt to taste <br /> <br />For Onion Coconut Paste <br />1 Onion, chopped lengthwise <br />3 tbsp Grated Fresh Coconut <br />Water <br /> <br />For Gravy <br />2 tbsp Oil <br />1 Onion, chopped <br />1 Tomato, chopped <br />1 tsp Ginger paste <br />1 tsp Garlic paste <br />1/2 tsp Turmeric powder <br />1 & 1/2 tsp Red Chilli Powder <br />1 tsp Goda Masala <br />1 tsp Garam Masala <br />Coriander Leaves <br /> <br />Method: <br /> <br />- In a pressure cooker add black eyed peas, water and salt. Let it cook on 4-5 whistles. <br />- In a pan add chopped onion and saute it golden brown. Then add grated coconut and saute till brown. Keep it aside to cool down. <br />- Add the sauted onion coconut in a mixer grinder. Add little water and grind everything to a smooth paste. Keep this paste aside. <br />- In a pan heat some oil. <br />- Add chopped onion and saute it. <br />- Then add ginger and garlic paste. Saute everything for few minutes. <br />- Then add turmeric powder, red chilli powder, goda masala and garam masala. Mix everything well. <br />- Add chopped tomatoes. Mix everything till the tomatoes are soft. <br />- Then add the cooked black eyed peas along with water. Give a stir. <br />- Cover it with a lid and let everything cook for few minutes. <br />- Garnish it with coriander leaves and serve hot!
